A careful orthodontic patient can
probably eat any food and do no damage to the appliances. However,
the following three types of food may cause trouble and should be
avoided if possible:
Hard foods: May do damage by bending
wires, loosening cement under the bands or breaking the little
brackets or tubes, which are attached to the tooth.
Sticky foods: Damage appliances by
bending wires and pulling cement loose.
Foods high in sugar content: Should be
avoided. If you do eat them eat only with a meal and brush your
teeth immediately. If it is not convenient to brush then always
rinse your mouth with clear water after eating very sweet foods
like cake or pie.
DON'T EAT: Popcorn, nuts, peanut
brittle, ice cubes, lemons, corn on the cob, corn chips, crisp tacos,
taffy, caramels, hard candy, hard pretzels, hard pizza crust.
Raw vegetables and fruits should be cut
in small pieces before eating. Biting on pencils or pen caps can
cause brackets and bands to become loose also.
We allow sugarless gum (not bubble gum)
in small amounts. |
