Oral Hygiene

Bright teeth for life!  Wearing orthodontic appliances takes a little effort - you know that better than anyone.  Let your work pay off!  If you wear braces or other appliances, you need to give your teeth extra care.  Food can get trapped between wires or pressed up against a tooth.  Over time, that can cause stains that won't come off.  It can also lead to cavities and gum disease.  Good cleaning habits can help prevent these problems.

How to Brush: Brushing your teeth and appliances should take at least 3 minutes.  For best results, use an brush with a small head and soft bristles.  Brush in the morning, after eating and before bed.

Holding the brush straight against the braces, scrub in small circles 10 times        Holding the brush at an angle towards the chewing surface, scrub in small circles 10 times This is the most important Step: Holding the brush at an angle towards the gums, scrub in small circles 10 times. Make sure that the gumline is also being cleaned.

How to Floss: Flossing daily helps get rid of bits of food that your brush can't reach.  This helps keep your gums healthy and prevents tooth decay. Try out different kinds of floss. Some may be easier for you to use.

Flossing with braces should be done once a day. A floss threader is very helpful in getting the floss under the archwire. The floss should be moved up and down along the sides of the teeth and under the gumline to remove the plaque.

Tips for better oral hygiene:  The best way to keep your teeth and braces clean is to brush and floss regularly.  It also helps to visit your dentist for cleanings.  Here are some other tips to help clean your teeth and appliances:

  • Carry a travel toothbrush for the times when you can't use your regular brush.

  • Rinse after eating.  This keeps food from sticking to your appliance when you cannot brush.

  • Try an electric toothbrush.  Electric and ultrasonic toothbrushes may make cleaning teeth easier.

  • Use prescribed rinse and gels.  These prevent stains on your teeth and keep your gums healthy.
