Separators: Maybe placed
between certain teeth to make room for banding at your next visit.
Bands: These are thin rings
of metal carefully fitted to the tooth and then cemented in place.
They carry brackets, hooks or tubes. They give us a way to grasp and
control each individual tooth. We generally use bands only on your
back teeth (molars).
Bonded brackets: Brackets
are bonded directly to the tooth surface. They act as handles to move
the tooth in the desired direction.
Archwires: These act as a
guide or track along which the teeth are to be moved. They are
changed periodically throughout the treatment. Each change brings us closer to the
ideal tooth position.
Alastics or "ties":
Individually or chains- they are used to to tie the archwire in the
track provided by the brackets. Chains close spaces.
Steel ties: These are funny
little wires that fasten your archwire to the brackets. They are
twisted, leaving a small pigtail, which is the tucked under the
archwire.
Palatal expanders: Are worn
to help guide the development of the upper arch, allowing more room
for the teeth to take their proper place in the mouth.
Bite Plate: An appliance
used to open the patients bite.
Rubber Bands or Elastics:
Provide a force that helps teeth move usually employing one arch or
group of teeth against the other.
